How Did Faye Die? Mysterious Demise in God of War Ragnarok Explored

God of War Ragnarok has addressed many unanswered concerns from the previous title, God of War (2018). Despite her role in Kratos and Atreus’ voyage across the nine realms, one figure remains a mystery: Faye, Kratos’ wife, and Atreus’ mother.

Faye’s final wish for her ashes to be scattered from the highest peak of all realms inspired Kratos and his son Atreus to travel through Midgard to Jotunheim. Still, her relationship with Kratos, Atreus, and the Giants remains unknown, even after the conclusion of God of War Ragnarok.

While players were finally able to see Faye, hear her voice, and learn about her and Kratos’ bond as husband and wife, her sudden death was not explored or addressed in either game. However, there are a few signs near the end of God of War Ragnarok that lead to the true reason for Faye’s death, such as a tremendous battle with Aesir and her role in Kratos’ eventual voyage to godhood.

Faye’s Death in God of War Ragnarok is Shrouded in Mystery, but Thor May Have Been Involved

While it was never clearly stated Faye may have perished as a result of the injuries she sustained while fighting Thor, the God of Thunder. Faye’s mortal status may also have led to her eventual death. However, there are suspicions that Thor was responsible for her death.

During the initial encounter between Kratos and Thor on the frozen Lake of Nine, Thor recounts witnessing the same lightning tree that resulted from the clash between Mjolnir and Leviathan Axe. It was a clear hint that Thor had fought Faye, the first wielder of the Leviathan Axe, before passing it down to her husband, Kratos.

Throughout the plot of God of War Ragnarok, Thor expresses his dislike for the Giants (Jotuns). During their final encounter in Asgard, Thor asks Kratos, “Don’t you know… what I’ve done?” after the Ghost of Sparta defeats him.

While the term may apply to Thor’s overall assault on the Jotuns, it sounds much more intimate, comparable to Kratos and Atreus slaying Thor and Lady Sif’s sons, Magni and Modi.

It is likely that Faye became ill with an undiscovered disease and died as a result of her mortal nature. But considering Faye’s nature as a fighter, who stands toe-to-toe with the Ghost of Sparta himself before taking the broken God of War under her protection and warmth, it feels anticlimactic that she would have died of a simple sickness.

Kratos begins God of War (2018) by cutting down a tree to use as the wood for his late wife’s funeral pyre. It was unlike any prior game in the series, representing the franchise’s significant break with the Norse saga. Faye played an important role in shaping Kratos and Atreus’ behavior from the beginning of the Norse story.

Though it was not immediately apparent at the beginning of the game, Freya was undoubtedly with Kratos and Atreus throughout their journey, assisting them to reach their destination and—above all—helping the father and son pair to finally come to terms with, get to know, and accept one another.

Faye Wanted More Than Kratos and Atreus Reaching the Greatest Pinnacle of All Realms

Her history as a Jotun capable of seeing into the future surprised both Kratos and Atreus, who were unaware of Faye’s true motivations. Faye’s aims were not limited to transporting the father-and-son combo to Jotunheim but also to see Kratos and Atreus grow and reach their genuine destinations, not because of what is promised in a prophecy but because it is required.

By the end of God of War Ragnarok, the father-son duo, despite their divergent paths, are united in a similar goal: a greater purpose. At the end of God of War Ragnarok, Atreus departs Midgard on his own to right Odin’s crimes and seek out any remaining Giants.

Kratos stayed behind with Freya and Mimir to repair the damage done to the realms following Ragnarok and finally became a god of “peace,” adored not out of fear but out of love and appreciation for his actions, something Kratos could never have anticipated, despite being born into godhood. This was Faye’s ultimate ambition.

God of War Ragnarok is an excellent conclusion to Kratos’ Norse saga, with Atreus embracing his role as Loki while remaining true to his identity as “Atreus,” and Kratos, despite everything he did in Greece, finally receiving the love of a family and admiration as a god, which is both heartbreaking and satisfying for any long-time God of War fan.
