Fans of the hit TV series ‘Shameless’ have been on a rollercoaster of emotions since the Gallagher family’s farewell in season eleven. As the dust settles after the spectacular finale, the big question on everyone’s mind is whether ‘Shameless’ will return for Season 12.
In this piece, we will look at the rumors, cast updates, and industry whispers about the possible continuance of this legendary show. Will the Showtime drama Shameless return for Season 12? Here’s what’s been mentioned about the conclusion and spin-off prospects thus far.
Will Shameless Return for Season 12?
Shameless Season 11 was billed as the “last call” for the Gallaghers and “the FINAL season” of the program, implying that there are currently no plans for the Showtime dramedy to return for Season 12.
In an interview with Variety in December 2020, executive producer John Wells revealed how they “have to walk away” from the Gallaghers’ lives “at some point:”
“With this, we’re just following people’s lives. We just have to walk away from them at some point.”
This appears to indicate that contractual or audience difficulties were not the driving force behind the cancellation of Shameless. However, it appears that the Showtime dramedy has just run its course following an excellent 11-season run.

The network did not cancel Shameless, and the team was allowed to complete the Gallaghers’ tale on their terms with a satisfying finale. Thus, the prospects of a Season 12 return appear slim.
However, the Shameless team was unable to complete all of its Season 11 plans, as the scripts had to be altered to incorporate the COVID-19 epidemic into the tale. He told Variety that even though they “had a lot of scripts” done, they all had to be rewritten since it would have been “criminal” not to investigate the matter.
“Those living barely above the poverty line or below the poverty line have been the most impacted by the pandemic, and we just felt it was something that we really had to do — to show the impact it’s having on our characters. It would have felt criminal not to.”
Even a spin-off continuation is improbable, with Wells telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2018 that he has “never been a big fan” of the concept. Instead, he would like to conclude the Gallaghers’ story with the idea that the family is still traveling to Chicago:
“I’ve never been a big fan of spinoffs. The moment we all decide we’ve done what we wanted to do on the show, we’ll walk the camera off down the street and give the impression that if you walk onto the right block in Chicago, you will find the Gallaghers.”
What Could Happen on Shameless Season 12?
Given Shameless’ prominent ensemble of Gallaghers, the team would have a difficult time finding performers to return for a Season 12 resurrection featuring new shenanigans.
For starters, the show’s original protagonist, Emmy Rossum’s Fiona, left the series after Season 9. And, while the actress had planned to return for the show’s finale but was unable to due to the COVID-19 epidemic, Rossum is unlikely to return for a long-term resurrection.
Not to mention, in the finale, Shameless concluded the narrative of a significant staple, William H. Macy’s Frank Gallagher, who died of COVID-19.
In terms of the main Gallagher family, Jeremy Allen White’s Lip, Cameron Monaghan’s Ian, Emma Rose Kenney’s Debbie, Ethan Cutkosky’s Carl, and Christian Isaiah’s Liam remain intriguing themes for a continuation.
After the finale of Shameless, the majority of the Gallaghers have gone their separate ways to start new lives. Overall, the Showtime series concludes with the premise that life continues for these folks.
For starters, Mickey and Ian are relocating to the West Side to enjoy the more upscale lifestyle it provides as they prepare to become parents someday.
Some of the Gallaghers have even left Chicago entirely, with Fiona still living in Florida. Debbie may be heading to Texas with her ex-con partner Heidi and daughter Franny.

Lip, Carl, and Liam are the only Gallaghers who still live in the familiar area, making it difficult to revive the show. Unless the show explores these individuals’ fates, any prospective Season 12 would need to create a purpose to reunite these characters.
However, Shameless Season 12 is doomed never to happen because it would undermine the advancement of these characters and return them to their ghetto origins from which they battled so hard to escape.
