Marta Kostyuk’s Early and Personal Life

Marta is the child of Oleh Kostyuk and Talina Beiko, his spouse. Her mother was a professional tennis player who had a career-high WTA rating of No. 391 and won a $10,000 championship in her home city of Kyiv in 1994 while representing a Ukrainian tennis team.

Her father was the technical director of the Antey Cup, a junior tennis event in Kyiv. Marta is the cousin of professional football players Vadym and Miro Slavov, as well as gymnast Oksana Slavova. She is also the sister of collegiate tennis player Mariya Kostyuk, who played for Chicago State University and Southeast Missouri State University.

Under her mother’s tutelage, Kostyuk began playing tennis at the Antey Tennis Club on the western edge of Kyiv at an early age. She said about her first tennis experience at the age of five: “My mom was always working a lot as a coach, and the first time I went to the courts to train, I just understood that if I started doing tennis, I’d get to spend more time with my mom. So that was kind of my motivation – if I played tennis, I’d be around her more often”.

Taras Beiko, her maternal uncle, who had played for the USSR and Ukraine in the late 1980s and early 1990s, also served as her coach. Kostyuk announced her engagement in March 2023. She married her fiancé Hryhoriy in November 2023 at an exclusive resort in Cyprus.

Marta Kostyuk’s Career

At the Australian Open, Kostyuk made her debut on the main draw of a tour. She became the first player born in 2002 to compete in a Grand Slam main draw after defeating Arina Rodionova, Daniela Seguel, and Barbora Krejčíková in the qualifying round after winning a wildcard entrance.

Kostyuk became the youngest player to win a main-draw match in Melbourne since Martina Hingis in 1996 when he defeated Peng Shuai in the opening round. She won in straight sets against Australian wildcard Olivia Rogowska in the second round.

By doing this, she made history as the youngest player to advance to the third round of a Grand Slam competition since Mirjana Lučić-Baroni did so in the US Open of 1997. She did, however, lose to fourth-seeded and native player Elina Svitolina in the third round.

Although Kostyuk advanced to the final of the $60k Zhuhai Open in March after winning the $60k Burnie International tournament in Australia in February, she was unable to maintain her level of performance throughout the remainder of the year.

She took home two more ITF Circuit championships in 2019 and qualified for the WTA tournament in Strasbourg, where she fell to fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinals. She rated No. 155 at the end of the season.
