Charlie and his brothers Robert and Ronnie helped establish and promote infectious, durable, upbeat funk music with the Gap Band from the outset of his career. Leon Russell and Denny Cordell’s Shelter Records released The Gap Band’s 1974 debut album, Magicians Holiday.
The band was recorded in Tulsa’s historic Church Studio. The group’s songs “Outstanding,” “Party Train,” “Yearning for Your Love,” “Burn Rubber on Me,” “You Dropped a Bomb on Me,” and “Oops Upside Your Head” are among the most sampled in music history. The Gap Band retired in 2010 after 15 albums.
