Derrick Henry Injury Update: Will He Roar Back Against the Jaguars in Week 18?

Derrick Henry was in the midst of perhaps his best game of the season when he was injured on Sunday, December 3, 2023. What happened to Henry in Week 13, and what is his current injury status?

Update on Derrick Henry’s Injury

Henry had already rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns before collapsing early in the fourth quarter of the Titans’ game against the AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts.

He took his time getting up and then went to the blue medical tent on Tennessee’s sideline. A concussion expert from the NFL entered the tent with Henry, indicating that he was being evaluated for a brain injury.

After leaving the medical tent, Henry retreated to the Titans’ locker room and never returned to the game on Sunday.

With Henry out, third-round rookie Tyjae Spears took over as the Titans’ starting running back. Spears, who had more than 1,800 yards in his final season at Tulane, had only played 32 fewer offensive snaps than Henry before Week 13 but had received over 100 fewer touches.

While earlier reports said Henry was in the NFL’s concussion protocol, head coach Mike Vrabel stated on Monday that Henry was not in the protocol and was not experiencing any symptoms. Tennessee, on the other hand, will keep an eye on the veteran back ahead of Monday night’s game against the Miami Dolphins.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday morning, Henry is in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Tennessee plays the Miami Dolphins in Week 14 on Monday night, giving Henry one extra day to clear the league’s head injury protocol. Still, Henry may struggle to pass the necessary exams in time for MNF.

In three of the previous four seasons, Henry, who turns 30 in January, had at least 300 carries. He is set to be a free agent in 2024.
