Since the 1980s, hearts have been won over by the distinctive voice and varied manner of the legendary American singer-songwriter and LGBTQ+ activist Cyndi Lauper. Though her singles like “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” have made her famous, people are often curious about her personal life.
Lauper has been a well-known character in mainstream culture for many years, distinguished by her bold demeanor and boundary-pushing style. Some people might be surprised to learn the information regarding her marital status, though. A closer look at Lauper’s personal life reveals a path filled with love, family, and resiliency, as well as insights into her relationships and responsibilities.
Is Cyndi Lauper Married?
Actor David Thornton and Cyndi Lauper were wed in 1991. On the set of Off and Running, the two people met for the first time. The Girls Just Want To Have Fun singer said that she was going through a “terrible” time in her life when she met Thornton in a 1992 interview with The Independent.
Lauper revealed at the time that she had split up with Dave Wolff, her manager and six-and-a-half-year lover, and was feeling entirely down about having to leave their home.
“To make things worse, I got into a no-win masochistic situation with this man who wasn’t particularly good-looking. He was mean as hell to me. Then that ended. I felt ugly, dull, and a mess. I was convinced I was through as an artist.”
But when she met David, who was initially “really shy” around her, things changed. Cyndi Lauper disclosed that she started to send him “teasing notes,” a behavior she exhibits when she develops feelings for someone.
“At nights, we used to walk on the beach after dinner. The moon was always out on the water, and one night I said: ‘I wish I was a kite flying over the waves’ and he said: ‘Why not be a wave?’ I thought ‘Oh my God, this man is a poet.’”
In the first two weeks of getting to know one another, the couple started dating and discussed getting married. They had been by one other’s sides for thirty years, through thick and thin.
Declyn Wallace Thornton Lauper, Cyndi and David’s only child, was born on November 19, 1997. The 25-year-old pursued a career in art, following in his mother’s footsteps.

Cyndi Lauper’s Biography
Lauper was born into a Catholic family in Brooklyn, New York City. Her father, Fred, was descended directly from Christen Lauper, the leader of the 1653 Swiss Peasant War, and was of German and Swiss origin.
Sicilian-born Catrine (née Gallo), her mother, was of Italian ancestry (1930–2022). Lauper has two siblings: her elder sister Ellen and her younger brother Fred, also known as Butch. When Lauper was five years old, her parents separated. Mom got married again and got divorced once more.
Growing up in the Queens neighborhood of Ozone Park, Lauper was exposed to music from musicians like Judy Garland and The Beatles. She started writing songs and playing an acoustic guitar that her sister had given her when she was twelve.
David and Cyndi First Met on Set
On the set of their 1991 movie Off and Running, Thornton and Lauper first got together. The movie was like “a vacation from myself, a way to get lost in work and forget who I was,” Lauper said to The Independent after her recent breakup with her manager and fiancé, Dave Wolff.
She said, “Then I met David, and everything changed.”
As Thornton put it, he and Lauper “didn’t communicate much on set at first,” but after “Cyndi asked if I wanted to join her and her assistant for dinner,” they got along. He continued, “There wasn’t an immediate buzz, but we laughed a lot. And the great thing is that she’s not a bit starry, so the first thing that happened was a real friendship began to develop.”
Their relationship just got stronger after that. “She began inviting me to join her for dinner regularly, and after a couple of weeks, it dawned on me that I really liked her an awful lot,” Thornton said to the newspaper.
