Following his return from Vietnam, North worked as a counterintelligence officer and was subsequently posted to the Reagan administration’s National Security Council staff. He was hired in 1985 to work as a staff member of the National Security Council, where he was exposed to the Iran-Contra scandal.
North was assigned to assist in the sale of weapons to Iran, which at the time was subject to an arms embargo, which is how his involvement in the Iran-Contra scandal got started.
