NFL Legend Joe Thomas Weight Loss: How Many Pounds Did He Lose?

NFL fans will recognize some familiar names and faces when the 2023 Pro Football Hall of Fame class is inducted in Canton, Ohio. However, Joe Thomas’s visage might not be as well-known.

Thomas is well-known for his time as one of the league’s most dominant offensive linemen when playing with the Browns. However, his appearance has completely changed from when he was playing in Cleveland.

Fans who have watched Thomas as an NFL Network analyst since his playing days ended have been shocked by his considerable weight transformation following his retirement in 2018. The six-time All-Pro and ten-time Pro Bowler has changed dramatically, and he didn’t take long to cut back on his playing schedule.

All the information you need to know about Thomas’ weight loss and how he claims to have been able to get in shape after almost ten years of playing large-sized football in the NFL is provided here.

In 2018, Thomas told the NFL Network that he was “more eager to lose weight than almost anything in retirement,” claiming to have lost approximately 50 pounds from his playing weight in the months following his final season.

Later, he revealed to GQ that his body was beginning to feel the effects of carrying more than 300 pounds.

“I was constantly on all sorts of anti-inflammatories and medicines to deal with the pain. Trying to keep that weight on meant eating a lot of crap. I’m not really naturally a huge guy, so to be 300 pounds, I was eating 6,000, 7,000 calories a day,” Thomas stated.

Joe Thomas’ Diet

Thomas actually lost the weight without exerting a Herculean effort. He said that by eating nearly the daily required calorie intake, he lost weight swiftly. During his time with the Browns, Thomas needed to consume numerous extra calories every day in order to sustain his playing weight, which varied between 315 and 300 pounds.

Thomas told GQ that he started to pay attention to what he was putting into his body after he lost weight through regular meals.

“After that, I had to eat smarter. As I tracked my meals, I started to understand my ideal ratio of protein, carbs, and fats,” he added, crediting a Brown’s nutritionist with teaching him about the nutrients in his diet.

Following his retirement, Thomas worked for a while as an analyst for NFL Network, and he still doesn’t resemble the player he once was. He’s in the best shape of his life right now, about to enter the Hall of Fame.

Joe Thomas’s Before and After Images

Thomas’ weight loss wasn’t simply obvious on the scale: after retirement, he completely altered his figure to the point that the photographs below appear to be of two different people.

What is Joe Thomas’s Weight?

Although Thomas hasn’t disclosed his precise weight, he says he shed 50 pounds after retiring, referring to his playing weight as 300 pounds. That would place his weight as of right now close to 250 pounds. That’s a number to be proud of for a 6’6″ man who has dedicated his career to eating to stay that way.

In the NFL, different responsibilities call for different sizes; therefore, offensive linemen are forced to take advantage of their stature. For offensive linemen like Thomas, power, and size are more important than anything else when it comes to securing a hole for the running back or shielding the quarterback from blitzes approaching.

Thomas isn’t the only ex-NFL offensive lineman who has undergone an astonishing makeover since retiring. Following his retirement from the NFL, former Ravens guard Marshal Yanda shed sixty pounds; other NFL greats, Russell Okung, Matt Birk, and Alan Faneca, also astonished spectators with their post-football makeovers.
