Ian Lavender was born in Birmingham, England, on February 16, 1946. He went to a school called Bournville Boys Technical School, where he acted in many school plays.
After that, he went to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, which he could attend thanks to a grant from the City of Birmingham. He finished his acting school in 1967 and then acted on a stage in a place called Canterbury.
