What Happened To Chuy Montana?
Chuy Montana was shot and killed in Tijuana, Mexico, by a roadside. According to Tijuana police, Cardenas was attacked by a gang of armed men on the Playas de Rosarito-Tijuana road with the intention of kidnapping the vocalist of Corridos Tumbados. By leaping out of the car the suspects had put him in, Cardenas was able to escape his captors’ hands.
Montana was allegedly shot multiple times in the back of the head and in his arms. At least five shell casings were discovered by police at the crime scene. Montana was discovered dead, handcuffed at the wrists, next to an orange van.

When Did Chuy Montana Pass Away?
Chuy passed away on February 7, 2024. In a statement, Cardenas’ record company Street Mob Records—owned by well-known Mexican musician Jesús Ortiz Paz of the band Fuerza Regida—confirmed his passing.
The message on Instagram said, “On behalf of Street Mob Records, we deeply regret the passing of our colleague and brother Chuy Montana. We stand in solidarity with his family during this time of grief. We kindly request understanding and respect from the media at this difficult moment.”

Sharing two recordings of the two singing at what looked to be private gatherings, Ortiz Paz expressed his grief at Cardenas’ passing.
One of the videos shows Cardenas sitting on a sofa and playing the guitar while the frontman of Fuerza Regida is rapping. It was posted on Ortiz Paz’s Instagram Stories. In the second video, which was shot in an opulent backyard, Cardenas and Ortiz Paz can be seen rapping together.
