Gabby Douglas Early Life and Education
Gabrielle Douglas was born in Newport News, Virginia on December 31, 1995. She grew up in Virginia Beach with her parents, Timothy and Natalie, and her siblings: two sisters named Arielle and Joyelle, and one brother named Johnathan.
Gabrielle started doing gymnastics when she was six years old because her sister thought it would be a good idea. She got really good at it, and when she was eight, she won a big gymnastics competition in Virginia.
When she was fourteen, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa, to train with a famous gymnastics coach named Liang Chow. Even though her family stayed in Virginia, she went to Iowa to practice gymnastics full-time.
In Iowa, she lived with a family named Travis and Missy Parton and their four daughters. One of the Parton girls also trained with Coach Chow. Gabrielle has been homeschooled since she was in the third grade because she had to spend so much time training for gymnastics.

Douglas started competing internationally in 2008 at the US Classic in Houston, Texas, where she came in 10th overall. She also competed in the 2008 Visa Championships in Boston, placing 16th, but couldn’t join the Junior Women’s National Team because of her ranking.
In 2009, she had a setback when she broke her wrist’s growth plate, missing the 2009 Covergirl US Classic and only doing beam and floor exercises at the 2009 Visa Championships.
In 2010, she continued in junior gymnastics, participating in several events including the Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup and the Pan American Championships.
She stepped into senior gymnastics in 2011, winning gold with the US team at the City of Jesolo Trophy and the World Championships. She also won silver and tied for bronze in different events at national competitions that year.
In 2012, despite being an alternate, she had the highest overall score at the AT&T American Cup. She continued to shine, winning medals at various competitions and securing a spot on the US Olympic gymnastics team by coming first in the all-around at the 2012 Olympic Trials.
