Viktor Bout and Alla have been a couple since 1992. Alla is a creative person who makes art and used to have her own clothing shops in different places. They first met each other in Mozambique during the late 1980s. They have a daughter who was born in 1994. Viktor’s brother, Sergey, is in charge of an aviation company in the UAE and Bulgaria.

Viktor Bout, who was born on January 13, 1967, is a Russian involved in the illegal selling of weapons. He used to translate in the Soviet military and later smuggled weapons to Africa and the Middle East during the 1990s and 2000s. People called him the “Merchant of Death” because of what he did.
In 2008, authorities from Thailand and the USA, with help from Interpol, arrested him in Thailand on charges related to terrorism. The U.S. wanted him sent there, and Thailand sent him in 2010. He was accused of trying to sell weapons to someone from the U.S. who was pretending to be part of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a group the U.S. considers a terrorist organization. Bout said he didn’t do this.
In 2011, a U.S. court found him guilty of trying to kill Americans, giving missiles to others, and helping terrorists. He was given a 25-year prison sentence but was released after 10 years in 2022. His release happened because of a trade for American basketball player Brittney Griner, who was being held in Russia.
After getting out of prison, Bout went back to Russia. In 2022, he joined a political party in Russia and ran for a political position in the Ulyanovsk region. He won this election in July 2023.

Russian weapons seller Viktor Bout came back to Moscow on Thursday. He was traded for Brittney Griner, a basketball player from the U.S., in a prisoner swap. When he got back, TV showed him hugging his mom and wife.

Bout, who is 55, had been in a U.S. jail since 2012 because he was found guilty of selling arms. He mentioned that he had no idea about the swap until the very last moment when they suddenly told him to get ready to leave. He showed up with flowers and first hugged his mother, then his wife.
