He was part of a really big football game in 1969, where his team, the Longhorns, narrowly beat Arkansas with a score of 15-14. Just a few days after this big win, Freddie told his coach, Darrell Royal, that his leg was hurting a lot. The coach got worried and told Freddie to get an X-ray.
The X-ray showed a dangerous tumor in his thigh bone, which was cancer. This meant doctors had to remove his left leg to try and stop the cancer from spreading. Only three weeks after his surgery, Freddie managed to join his team at another big game, the Cotton Bowl, against Notre Dame, even leading them onto the field.
