Akira Toriyama, the legendary creator behind the iconic “Dragon Ball” series, has passed away on March 1, 2024. He was 68 years old.
He died because of an acute subdural hematoma, which means he had bleeding in his brain. His family has quietly held a funeral to honor him and say goodbye in private.
Family’s Request for Privacy
After this unfortunate loss, Toriyama’s family has asked for privacy. They are not accepting gifts, visits, offerings, or interview requests.
However, Bird Studio, which is Toriyama’s own design and production studio, has announced plans for a future event to celebrate his life and work.

Toriyama first made waves in the manga world with “Dr. Slump” in 1980. This series was a hit, leading to two TV anime adaptations and several movies.
But it was “Dragon Ball,” starting in 1984 and continuing until 1995, that catapulted him to international fame.
This series has inspired countless manga and anime sequels, spin-offs, and films. The story’s hero, Goku, is now a globally recognized character.

Up until his passing, Toriyama was deeply involved in the “Dragon Ball Daima” anime series, the latest installment based on “Dragon Ball.”
He contributed to the new anime’s story and character designs. Additionally, his “Sand Land” manga was turned into an anime film in Japan in August 2022.
An anime series based on “Sand Land” is set to premiere worldwide on March 20, followed by a game release on April 26, 2024.
