Editor’s note: The original November 2022 version of this article was lost. The Lee Daily Register rebuilt it in October 2026 from the sources cited below, and added what happened afterward. The original version predicted that Season 2 could premiere between November 2022 and early 2023. That did not happen; the season premiered on Sept. 1, 2023.

A year after “The Wheel of Time” first arrived on Prime Video, fans are still waiting on a date for Season 2. The episodes are filmed, a third season has already been ordered, and the cast is growing. Here is where things stand.

Filmed in Prague, with no date yet

Production on Season 2 began in Prague on July 19, 2021, Reactor (formerly Tor.com) reported. The show’s official Twitter account announced on May 18, 2022, that filming had wrapped, Murphy’s Multiverse reported.

Amazon has not tied itself to a premiere window. When Prime Video renewed the series for a third season at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21, 2022, it did not give a date for either season, Entertainment Tonight reported. That renewal came before Season 2 had even premiered, TheWrap noted.

As with Season 1, the new episodes will stream on Prime Video. The series is based on Robert Jordan’s fantasy novels, and Rafe Judkins is the showrunner.

Who is coming back, and who is new

The core cast returns: Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, Daniel Henney as Lan, Zoë Robins as Nynaeve, Madeleine Madden as Egwene, Josha Stradowski as Rand and Marcus Rutherford as Perrin, according to Entertainment Tonight.

One major role has changed hands. Dónal Finn replaces Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon, Reactor reported. No reason for Harris’ exit has been given, TechRadar has reported.

The newcomers announced so far include:

  • Ceara Coveney as Elayne Trakand
  • Ayoola Smart as Aviendha
  • Arnas Fedaravicius as Masema
  • Gregg Chilingirian as Lord Ingtar
  • Meera Syal and Natasha O’Keeffe, whose roles were not disclosed when their casting was announced

A season that splits the group

Judkins has said the first season kept the main characters traveling together, which can make it hard for viewers to get to know each of them. In Season 2 they are split up, and he said watching each actor develop on their own is his favorite part so far, TheWrap reported.

What happened next

Amazon confirmed the date in May 2023. Season 2 premiered on Prime Video on Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, with three episodes, followed by weekly episodes through the finale on Oct. 6, TechRadar reported. The season drew on Jordan’s second and third novels, “The Great Hunt” and “The Dragon Reborn.” Syal played Verin Mathwin, an Aes Sedai of the Brown Ajah.

Season 3 was the show’s best-reviewed season, with a 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Even so, Amazon canceled the series on May 23, 2025, after three seasons, according to Deadline as cited by TechRadar. Production costs and a drop in viewing during Season 3 were cited as the main reasons.
