For the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, Nicki Minaj is returning to her dual roles as emcee and performer from the previous year. The VMAs will be broadcast live on Tuesday, September 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The performance was emceed by Minaj, LL Cool J, and Jack Harlow the year before. She additionally gave a nine-song medley that was themed around her winning the Video Vanguard Award. She is the only emcee this year and will perform her most recent track, “Last Time I Saw You.”
In MTV’s announcement of Minaj’s booking, the word “host” is never used once. It repeatedly refers to her as the “emcee” instead. However, the sentence “Minaj will announce the show’s star-studded lineup of performers, presenters and winners.”
Since comedian Russell Brand took on the role in 2008–09, this is the first time someone has headlined the program for two years in a row. Shakira is expected to win the Video Vanguard Award this year, which last year went to Minaj in addition to her roles as emcee and performer.
Minaj has had 25 nominations and six VMA wins. This year, she is up for six awards: Artist of the Year, Best Hip-hop Video, Best Visual Effects, Best R&B Song for “Love in the Way,” and Song of the Summer for “Barbie World,” a collaboration with Ice Spice that includes Aqua.
More often than anyone else in the history of the award, Minaj has won best hip-hop four times. (Drake has three victories and is in second place.) She received awards for “Super Bass” (2011), “Anaconda” (2015), “Chun-Li” (2018), and “Do We Have a Problem,” a joint effort with Lil Baby, in 2022.

It’s difficult to believe, but Minaj was scheduled for the 2010 VMAs pre-show. She collaborated with Will. I.AM will perform the songs “Your Love” and “Check It Out.”
In 2012, she moved up to the main show and surprised everyone with a surprise rap verse on Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire.” She performed three songs in one year in 2014: “Anaconda,” “Bang Bang,” and “She Came to Give It to U” with Usher. The first song transported listeners to the Amazonian jungle.
