Editor’s note: The original October 2022 version of this article was lost. The Lee Daily Register rebuilt it in October 2026 from the reporting cited below, and added what happened afterward. The original version said Mulaney and Olivia Munn’s son had been born the month before it was published; that was not accurate, because the baby was born in November 2021. It also repeated affair claims based on fans’ pregnancy arithmetic. No such claim has been documented, and this version does not repeat them.

Since John Mulaney’s marriage to Anna Marie Tendler ended and his relationship with actor Olivia Munn became public, one question has followed the comedian online: did he cheat? In the statements and interviews reviewed for this article, none of the three people involved has said he did. Here is what each of them, and the reporting around them, has put on the record.

The split, in Tendler’s words

Mulaney and Tendler married in July 2014, TMZ reported. In May 2021, after Mulaney had spent two months in a rehab facility, People reported that the couple were separating. Tendler said in a statement that she was “heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage” and wished him success in his recovery, according to a TODAY timeline of the relationship.

Her statement made clear the decision was his. It did not accuse him of infidelity.

Mulaney’s own timeline

Mulaney laid out his version on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in September 2021. He said he went to rehab in September 2020, left in October and moved out of the home he shared with his wife. He said he relapsed after hosting “Saturday Night Live” on Halloween, went back to rehab after an intervention by friends, got out in February 2021 and spent about a month and a half in sober living. In the spring, he said, he went to Los Angeles and began dating Munn, whom he had first met at Meyers’ 2013 wedding, TODAY reported.

On the same show he announced that Munn was pregnant. TMZ later reported, citing a legal filing, that the divorce was finalized in New York in January 2022. The outlet also said the couple had first split in October 2020.

Munn on the rumors

Munn addressed the online backlash in a November 2021 interview with the Los Angeles Times. She said people were speculating incorrectly, that no one outside could know what Mulaney’s relationships had been, and that she would not respond to specific claims because doing so would feed a false narrative, according to TODAY’s summary of the interview.

Their son, Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, was born that November, and the couple shared the news on Instagram in December 2021, The Associated Press and TODAY reported.

In a Harper’s Bazaar profile published in January 2022, Tendler called the events since the split shocking and surreal and said she now planned to freeze her eggs, Entertainment Tonight reported. Entertainment Tonight’s account of the profile does not quote her accusing Mulaney of infidelity.

What happened next

Mulaney and Munn married in July 2024, and in September 2024 their daughter, Méi June Mulaney, was born through a gestational surrogate, the AP reported.

In a November 2024 cover story, GQ described how the relationship began. The magazine reported that Mulaney and Munn reconnected in early 2021 after he left rehab, and Munn said what followed was nowhere near dating and that she barely knew him at the time she became pregnant. She said she expected they would co-parent, and the two decided to raise Malcolm as a couple only about two months before he was born. GQ reported that Mulaney declined to talk about his first marriage and that he does not appear in Tendler’s memoir, published that year.
