Editor’s note: The original February 2023 version of this article was lost. The Lee Daily Register rebuilt it in October 2026 from the sources cited below, and added what happened afterward. The original version repeated an online rumor that Bolton had Parkinson’s disease and discussed a condition it called “Samson syndrome.” We found no credible reporting that Bolton had either, and those passages have been removed. Its figures for his net worth and its claims about his family history were also unsourced and are not repeated here.
Questions about Michael Bolton’s health that circulated online in early 2023, including on the original version of this page, rested on rumor rather than on anything the singer had said. Bolton spent much of 2023 performing, with stops in Las Vegas, Mexico and Italy, The Boston Globe later reported.
The account below sticks to Bolton’s own statements and to what established news organizations reported about them, in the order they happened.
Why the early rumors do not hold up
In researching this rebuild, we found no statement from that period by Bolton or his representatives, and no report from an established news organization, confirming a Parkinson’s diagnosis or any other illness. When the singer did disclose a serious health problem, nearly a year later, it was a different one, and he announced it himself.
What happened next
January 2024: surgery for a brain tumor. On Jan. 5, 2024, Bolton, then 70, told fans on his official Facebook page that a brain tumor had been found just before the holidays and that he had needed immediate surgery. He said the operation was a success and that he was recovering at home with his family, CNN reported via ABC7. He said he would take a temporary break from touring, which affected early February dates in Florida, a Feb. 9 show in Indio, California, and concerts in Canada, Switzerland and other U.S. cities scheduled through the end of May.
February 2025: a London show canceled. On Feb. 7, 2025, Bolton used his Instagram Story to cancel a July 5 greatest-hits concert at the O2 Arena in London, where Bonnie Tyler was to appear as a guest. He wrote that he was “continuing to heal from surgery,” and said tickets would be refunded automatically, the PA news agency reported. The show had first been set for July 25, 2024, before being moved to 2025 during his recovery.
April 2025: the diagnosis in detail. In a People magazine cover interview published April 30, 2025, Bolton spoke at length about his illness. People reported that he has glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2023 after emergency surgery in which doctors removed the tumor in its entirety, FOX 32 Chicago summarized. A second brain surgery followed in January 2024 because of an infection, and he completed radiation and chemotherapy in October 2024.
According to the same report, the treatment affected his short-term memory, speech and mobility. He has an MRI every two months to watch for a recurrence, and his scan in April 2025 was clear. People reported that he had deliberately not been given a prognosis. Bolton, who is recovering at his home in Westport, Connecticut, said his idea of legacy had shifted from his career toward preparing his three daughters for the future, and that he intended to keep going.
That interview is the latest health update from Bolton that we could confirm through an established news outlet as of October 2026.
