Editor’s note: The original February 2022 version of this article was lost. The Lee Daily Register rebuilt it in October 2026 from the sources cited below, and added what happened afterward. The original version said she had a net worth of more than $10 million. We found no credible source for that figure, so we removed it. We also removed claims about her personal life and research that we could not confirm.
As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continued, the U.S. Treasury Department on Friday imposed sanctions on President Vladimir Putin himself, along with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. In its announcement, Treasury said it is exceedingly rare for it to designate a head of state.
Little about Putin’s two adult daughters is on the public record. Putin has made clear since his early days in power that his family is off-limits to the media, and the topic has long been close to taboo in Russia, Novaya Gazeta Europe has reported. Both women have nonetheless been the subject of investigations by independent media.
Who she is
The elder daughter is known publicly as Maria Vorontsova. She was born Maria Putina and is also known as Maria Faassen, according to an official European Union listing published in April 2022. The same listing gives her date of birth as April 28, 1985.
She is an endocrinologist by training and a member of Russia’s Association for the Promotion of Science, Novaya Gazeta Europe reported. Her younger sister is Katerina Tikhonova.
Is her net worth known?
No. We found no disclosure of her finances by Vorontsova or the Kremlin, and no estimate of her wealth from a credible financial publication. The figures circulating on celebrity “net worth” websites, including the one this site originally published, cite no verifiable source.
Government records, released weeks after this article first appeared, describe a business stake but do not put a value on it.
What happened next
On April 6, 2022, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned Vorontsova and Tikhonova, identifying both as Putin’s daughters. Treasury said Vorontsova leads state-funded genetics research programs that have received billions of dollars from the Kremlin and are personally overseen by Putin. The designation was made because they are the adult children of a sanctioned person.
Two days later, on April 8, the British government announced travel bans and asset freezes on both sisters and on Lavrov’s daughter, Yekaterina Vinokurova. The European Union added Vorontsova to its own sanctions list the same day. In that official listing, the EU described her as co-owner of 20% of Nomenko, a company involved in Russia’s largest private investment project in healthcare, with an estimated cost of 40 billion roubles.
Vorontsova made a rare public appearance in June 2024 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. She spoke in person for less than five minutes on a bioeconomy panel, while Tikhonova joined a separate session by video, Novaya Gazeta Europe reported. Putin has never publicly confirmed the names of his daughters, CNN reported at the time.
