Ms. Marvel’s Kevin Feige reveals the reasoning behind changing Kamala Khan’s Inhuman abilities and hints at how this may tie into the rest of the MCU. It’s now been explained by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige as to why Ms. Marvel’s origin narrative and new powers for Kamala Khan have been changed. Merchandise and photographs leaked ahead of the debut of the first Ms. Marvel teaser suggested Kamala wouldn’t be able to stretch and shrink as she does in the books. There was a consensus among Marvel fans that they were trying to separate themselves from Mr. Fantastic, who would make an appearance in the next Fantastic Four revival. Others reasoned that the character’s abilities wouldn’t translate well to CGI, as they had in prior live-action renditions.
Then there’s the matter of Inhumans not existing in the regular Marvel Cinematic Universe. “We adapt the comics; it’s not an exact translation,” Feige said to Empire regarding the numerous adjustments to Ms. Marvel’s backstory. “[Kamala] came about in a very specific time within the comic-book continuity. She is now coming into a very specific time within the MCU continuity. And those two things didn’t match.”
A Terrigen Mist bomb detonating over New York City and awakening numerous Nuhumans around the planet has not been seen in the MCU, as Feige teased. Marvel Studios is eager to debut Ms. Marvel, therefore it seems the business has taken the Inhumans in a different route. Fans of her classic abilities, on the other hand, maybe satisfied with what they see.
After Feige said, “What we will learn about where those powers come from, and how they come about, is specific to the MCU,” he added: “You will see great comic splash panels in some of our action sequences. If you want big, giant hands and arms, well they’re here in spirit, if not in stretchy, plastic-type ways.”
Kamala refers to her new abilities as “cosmic” in the teaser, and they appear to be just that. Perhaps this is part of a strategy to bring her closer to Captain Marvel and the WandaVision powers she inherited from Monica Rambeau. The Marvels, due out next year, will have all three characters teaming up, and producer Kevin Feige has all but confirmed that Kamala’s new skills will play a role.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirms that “It taps into the future of her story as it connects to her other friends that she will meet in the upcoming film The Marvels, [Iman’s] interested in knowing, ‘Great, does that mean I’m an Asgardian? Did I get hit with gamma rays?’ No, it’s seemingly none of those things. It goes to her past and her heritage and lineage.”
