What Happened in The Last of Us Part 2?
Ellie’s life was saved by Joel Miller, who admits to his brother Tommy his role in preventing the Fireflies from attempting to cure the Cordyceps fungus outbreak. Joel and Ellie have now been married for four years and live in Jackson, Wyoming, where they have made a life together despite their troubled relationship.
Joel and Tommy save Abby Anderson from an Infected horde while out on patrol. Abby’s former Fireflies are now part of the Washington Liberation Front, a militia based in Seattle, Washington. They return to an outpost controlled by Abby’s group. It’s Abby’s revenge against Joel for killing her father, the Firefly Surgeon.
For now, Ellie is on the run from Jackson, Mississippi, with her new flame Dina. In the wake of witnessing Abby brutally beating Joel to death, Ellie storms into the WLF camp, vowing vengeance.
Ellie and Dina accompany Tommy as he makes his way to Seattle in search of Abby. Ellie discloses her immunity to Dina after fleeing a WLF attack, and Dina then reveals that she is pregnant. Dina’s ex-boyfriend Jesse follows Ellie as she pursues Tommy on her own the following day. For the first time in the series, Ellie is introduced to the cult known as the Seraphites while searching for Abby’s friend Nora Harris.
As a result of Ellie tracking down Nora and torturing her for information on Abby’s whereabouts, she suffers a psychological injury. At lunch the next day, she kills two more women from Abby’s group, one of whom is pregnant.
When Ellie visits the Firefly hospital in Salt Lake City, a flashback reveals that Ellie learned the truth many years ago. Her severing all links with Joel was a heartbreaking decision for her. Abby ambushes Ellie’s gang in the present, killing Jesse and kidnapping Tommy.
Ellie and Dina live on a farm with Dina and Jesse’s son, but Ellie has PTSD. Ellie leaves when Tommy tells her where Abby is, despite Dina’s pleading. Abby and Lev come to Santa Barbara looking for the Fireflies, who are abducted, tortured, and left to die by the slave-keeping Rattlers. Ellie saves them in Santa Barbara.
Abby bites off two of Ellie’s fingers as she threatens to kill Lev. Ellie overpowers her but lets her life. Abby and Lev visit Fireflies. Ellie finds the farm deserted. She tries to play Joel’s guitar with her injured hand, remembers their final talk, and leaves.

The Last Part of Us Part 2 Production
Early The Last of Us Part II plot elements were conceived in 2013. Naughty Dog began work after The Last of Us was Remastered in 2014. After Uncharted: The Lost Legacy’s release in August 2017, Naughty Dog’s 350-person team began on Part 2. Neil Druckmann was the creative director and writer for The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016).
Anthony Newman and Kurt Margenau co-directed Part II, handling level design and mechanics. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the team had to finish development at home. The game had 2,169 developers from 14 studios.
Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker reprise Ellie and Joel, and Laura Bailey plays Abby. The actors’ performances were recorded using performance capture in Playa Vista, Los Angeles. Gross said the writers wanted to make “the most multifaceted game characters” She wanted to express Ellie’s power and anxieties.
The transformation from Ellie to Abby was influenced by Joel to Ellie in the previous game but highlighted in Part II due to its focus on empathy. Druckmann intended players to initially despise Abby but later sympathize with her.
