The suspense novel that served as the basis for the thriller, written by Louis Bayard in 2003, has a similar narrative. Veteran investigator Augustus Landor (Christian Bale), who has been hired to investigate the horrific murder of a military student, enlists the help of another cadet named Edgar Allan Poe, who is modeled like the real author and poet, to find the truth.
Unexpectedly, the movie only had a modest theatrical run in the US in December 2022 before being released on Netflix at the beginning of this year.
Where Was the Pale Blue Eye Filmed?
The Pale Blue Eye began filming in Pennsylvania in November 2021. The movie, set in the 1800s, needed an authentic historical atmosphere delivered by various places in Pennsylvania.

Many sequences in the movie were set against the ideal vintage backdrop of Westmoreland County’s Compass Inn. One portion of the inn’s structure dates back to 1799, with a long and fascinating history. The Compass Inn, now a museum, gives visitors a glimpse into life in the early 1800s and is open for tours.
The Westminster College campus in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, appears in The Pale Blue Eye as another Pennsylvania setting. The military academy that is the movie’s focus is set against a beautiful backdrop provided by the college. According to the college newspaper, a casting call for extras to play cadets in the thriller reportedly drew more than 100 college students.
The Pale Blue Eye frequently mentions McConnells Mill State Park in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. The murder mystery film includes images of Slippery Rock Creek, a stunning body of water, and the old mill perched above it.
Writer-Director Scott Cooper Recently Spoke About His Love for Pittsburgh
For those unaware, this movie is Christian Bale and writer-director Scott Cooper’s third. Out of the Furnace, a crime drama that was set in Pennsylvania and had some filming in the Pittsburgh metropolitan region was their first collaboration. Now that the pair has rejoined (in Pittsburgh, no less), we are left to ponder what exactly makes the East Coast region so unique.
Fortunately, the director opened out in a Trib Live interview.
According to Scott, who spoke with the outlet via Zoom, “I had an excellent experience the first time when I shot Out of the Furnace and made a lot of terrific friends, one of whom is your incoming (U.S.) senator, John Fetterman.” “I adore Pittsburgh’s residents, and the teams there are outstanding. I adore the Braddock populace. I feel a strong connection to that city.”
He went on, “And it seemed like Western Pennsylvania would be the best location possible for trying to recreate the Hudson Valley in 1830. The Appalachian Mountain range is the same. I was confident that it would provide the landscape I wanted. I was confident that it would provide me with the desired weather. I was therefore delighted to return.”
The Pale Blue Eye West Point Academy
This private liberal arts college was established in 1852, and its iconic structures once served as the elite American army school’s central courtyards. A county park about ten miles outside downtown Pittsburgh, Hartwood Acres Stables, was used to film some of the academy’s exterior images.
This well-known wedding location was created in the late 1920s to imitate a Cotswold Village in central-southwest England. The vaulted Great Feast Hall in the Old Economy Village in Ambridge served as the location for the interior of Dr. Daniel Marquis’ morgue during filming.
The community, founded in 1824, served as the base of operations for the Harmony Society, a 19th-century Christian communal organization. There are seventeen restored structures on the six acres of this National Historic Landmark property, together with a lovely garden.
On the shores of Lake Arthur, between Lakeview Beach and Barber Point Beach, the scene with the hanging tree was filmed. In a brief view, the contemporary bridge over Route 422 can be seen in the distance. The Compass Inn Museum, a recreated late-18th-century stagecoach station, is located in Benny’s Haven, the pub where Patsy (played by Charlotte Gainsbourg) works.
This building was built in Laughlintown, Westmoreland County, in 1799 and is currently maintained by the Ligonier Valley Historical Society. This image shows how CGI was used to change the exterior. The sequences when Landor covertly meets Poe and the residence of Jean-Pepe, a professor specializing in symbols and rituals, are shot at Penguin Court.
The 10 penguins who originally roamed this expansive private estate close to Laughlintown gave it its name. It also has over 1,000 acres of forest, a conservatory, and an exceptional greenhouse. The neighboring McConnells Mill State Park in Lawrence County houses the red-covered bridge seen in an establishing shot.

This gristmill, which was initially constructed in 1852, ran until 1928. Most likely, the interior was filmed at the studios. The imposing Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville district served as the backdrop for the burial scene in the cemetery, according to Pittsburgh Magazine.
This is the sixth-oldest rural cemetery in the country, having been established in 1844. The exterior of Dr. Marquis’ home is the Hartwood Acres Mansion, which is situated in the same name-brand, gorgeous Allegheny County park.
With the aid of CGI, the filmmakers used a wing of the stately property to reduce its size slightly. This magnificent Tudor mansion, built in 1929 in the manner of the 16th century, is home to a collection of authentic English and American antiques.
