For more than two decades, the Shrek franchise has dominated popular culture and shown that other studios besides Pixar can be successful with computer-generated animation. Even though Shrek himself had his final major motion picture adventure in 2010’s Shrek Forever After, the well-known feline Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) starred in a prequel in 2011 that looked at his beginnings as an explorer. In Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Puss, whose experiences have seasoned her, decides to lay down his cape and sword after recognizing that he only has one life left to live out of nine. He meets up with his ex-girlfriend Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and his new friend Perrito (Harvey Guillén) for the adventure, where they all have to stay away from the evil gangster Jack Horner (John Mulaney).
A preview for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish declares that “this is a fairy tale,” and the movie unexpectedly has a different tone from the other entries in the franchise. Unlike any of the Shrek films, director Joel Crawford injects stylized action sequences and visual magnificence that feels more in line with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Despite declaring himself the “most brave hero” in the opening song, Puss battles cowardice throughout Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Puss fears for his life and regrets leaving Kitty at the altar on their planned wedding day. Puss, however, decides against using the star’s wish since he believes that his one life is worth fighting for.

After a bloody encounter, the Wolf decides he only wants to fight someone he considers invincible and departs, leaving Puss behind. The fact that he implies that it won’t be their final encounter suggests that Puss will eventually die. In Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Puss doesn’t achieve his heroism alone.
Kitty and Perrito support and assist him in taking on the antagonists in the decisive battle. He and Kitty pick up their relationship again, and as they embark on new adventures, they practically adopt Perrito. Perrito finally chooses a name despite never having one for himself as they rob a ship from an aristocrat Puss met early on. He selects the moniker Puss has been using to refer to him, which is appropriate.
What Happens to the Other Characters?
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish ends with Goldilocks and the bears helping Puss, despite their initial plan to take the wish for themselves. As she travels, Goldilocks concludes that the bears are the only family she will ever require. Initially, she intended to use the want to find a “true family.”
They ultimately decide to take over Horner’s pie-making business, which is amusingly not the kind of “family business” they had initially envisioned because she chooses to save Baby Bear rather than grant the request. Additionally, they enlist the Talking Cricket (Kevin McCann), a moral advisor Horner had abandoned after taking him from his magic bag.
When the star is flung back into space, Horner is overcome with avarice and falls into the disintegrating body of the star. The star’s map is obliterated, indicating that no one else will be drawn in by the possibility of fulfilling their wish. For youngsters, especially during the holiday season, it’s a fantastic message. It’s beautiful to appreciate what you currently have and the joy it offers you rather than wishing for anything.
Where is Puss Going After Puss in Boots The Last Wish?
Puss, Kitty, and Perrito steal the boat and set sail toward Far Away to see “some old friends.” This is where the titular Ogre (Mike Myers), his wife Fiona (Cameron Diaz), their offspring, and pals have experienced their adventures, as fans of the Shrek film series are aware.
Even though Shrek The Third ended with Artie (Justin Timberlake) ascending to the throne as King of Far Far Away, it’s possible that Shrek and his family will visit their friends there. In Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Shrek, and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) both make appearances in non-speaking capacities during a montage Puss has of his life. According to Crawford and Mercado, the “ball is in the fans’ court” where they want to see the franchise next.
Although it took more than 10 years for a second Puss in Boots movie to hit theaters, they hinted that there would be more Shrek sequels, a spinoff series following Perrito’s exploits, and possibly a third Puss in Boots movie. Despite the mixed reviews for Shrek Forever After, DreamWorks Animation co-founder and CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg have teased the prospect of a possible fifth installment in the franchise since 2014.
Following NBCUniversal’s acquisition of DreamWorks Animation in 2016, CEO Steve Burke made plans to make a new Shrek movie with a finished screenplay by Michael McCullers. In 2018, it was revealed that Chris Meledandri had been tasked with executive producing both Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and another Shrek movie.
McCullers had previously hinted that his plan is a “major reworking” of the brand. Given that Shrek Water activities at DreamWorks Water Park have already debuted, it appears likely that the series, in whatever shape it takes, has a bright future.
