According to court records, Ivon Adams, one of Athena Brownfield’s carers at the time of her disappearance, beat the child to death and buried her near their former residence. On January 10, Athena’s disappearance was initially reported to police in Cyril, Oklahoma, when Athena’s 5-year-old sister was spotted by a mail carrier roaming outside the residence.

Last Monday, both Adams and his wife were taken into custody and charged with various crimes related to the case. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said Tuesday that they had found a child’s remains, which will be sent to a medical examiner’s office for confirmed identification.

Adams’s wife, Alysia, allegedly told police on January 12 that her husband had beaten Athena on Christmas night and “held her up by her arms,” according to the affidavit for his arrest. Athena was “not moving and her eyes were barely open,” the affidavit alleged.

Alysia Adams reportedly told police that Ivon Adams “laid her on the ground and punched her at least three more times in the chest,” and that the youngster did not react afterward.

According to the court papers, Ivon Adams then “buried her near a fence line” close to their former home in Rush Springs after disposing of Athena’s body. According to the affidavit, he further claimed to his wife that he had thrown a “big broken branch” over the area. The state bureau of inquiry said Tuesday that the bones of a child had been found in rural Grady County, “outside of Rush Springs.”

According to court documents in Caddo County, Oklahoma, Ivon Adams was arrested on Thursday in Arizona and charged with first-degree murder and criminal child negligence. According to public records, he is still being held in Maricopa County Jail without bond. By Tuesday, he still hadn’t entered a plea, and CNN still hadn’t located an attorney who would take his case.

There are two counts of criminal child neglect against his wife, Alysia Adams. According to the criminal statement filed on Tuesday in Caddo County District Court, she is accused of “failing to protect (Athena) from physical abuse” by her husband and of “failing to provide sufficient care” for the children.

The kids’ biological mother entrusted them to the couple around two years prior, but the affidavit in her case claims that they never took Athena’s elder sister for medical checkups or enrolled her in school. During her court appearance, Alyssa Adams pled not guilty.
