Following injuries incurred in a collision during the USAC AMSOIL Sprint Car National Championship race at Lawrenceburg Raceway in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Owen passed away on April 9, 2023.
During his practice lap for the competition, the Harrison, Ohio, racer drifted high into Turn 3, lost control, and slammed into the wall. His car made a number of flips before finally taking off and landing in the circuit’s middle.
Just before 6:30 p.m., USAC immediately red-flagged the race, and 30 minutes later, the series announced that the event had been canceled. They made the announcement of Owen’s departure just after midnight.
