Mary Tyler Moore’s Struggles in her Marriage to Grant Tinker

Moore and Tinker seemed to have it all because The Mary Tyler Moore Show was so popular. Unfortunately, Moore didn’t feel complete in her marriage.

“He had just been offered a job in programming at NBC, and he was thrilled,” she wrote in her book, as reported by People. “I said to him at the time, ‘I bet we’re going to be television’s golden couple.’ What I didn’t see then was how empty the relationship would become.”

Moore kept talking and said that she and Tinker were always working. And as time went on, their fights got worse. “One night in 1973, after dinner and an argument, he said he thought we should separate, that we had ‘poisoned the marriage,’” Moore said. And because of this, she fell to her knees and had a childish temper tantrum that she “never allowed as a child.”

Moore and Tinker broke up for six weeks, then got back together and moved back in together in Beverly Hills. But Moore had an affair in the end, and Tinker also moved on. “When I went back to Los Angeles for Christmas, I learned that Grant had met someone else,” she wrote. “We’d moved on together in silence.” In 1981, they split up.

Mary Tyler Moore’s Marriage to Robert Levine in 1983

Tinker wasn’t the end of Moore’s love story. In the end, she moved on with a doctor named Robert Levine. People says that they met in 1982, when Moore’s mom was in the hospital and Levine was treating her.

“After I’d seen her mom the second time, I said to Mary, ‘If there’s an emergency, just get in touch with me,’” Levine told People back in 1984. “And Mary said, ‘Does acute loneliness count?’ And I said, ‘Yes.’”

Moore was 15 years older than Levine, but they fell in love quickly and deeply. Producer Emanuel Azenberg said of Levine, “He’s genuinely caring,” “There’s no question they’re in love. They both have too much integrity to stay with the relationship if they weren’t.”

Moore died in January 2017 at the age of 80, and Levine was the only person she left behind. “I can’t believe she is gone,” Levine said, according to People. “Mary was my life, my light, my love. The emptiness I feel without her with me is without bottom. … As long as we all remember her, talk about her, share our stories about her, and what she meant to us, her light will never go out.”
