The American singer Coco Lee, who was born in Hong Kong, has sadly passed away at the age of 48. She died on Wednesday, 5 July, 2023 after trying to take her own life, which led to her being in a coma.
This news was shared by her two sisters, Carol and Nancy Lee, on Instagram and Facebook. Coco Lee was living in Hong Kong and she died in Queen Mary Hospital there.
What happened to Coco Lee?
“Although, Coco sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her,” the statement said.
“On 2 July, she committed suicide at home and was sent to the hospital. Despite the best efforts of the hospital team to rescue and treat her from her coma, she finally passed away on 5 July, 2023,” the statement said.

Coco Lee had a music career that lasted about 30 years. She did some really cool things like being the voice of Mulan in the Chinese version of Disney’s “Mulan” and singing a song called “A Love Before Time” for the movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” that was nominated for an Oscar.
She was born in Hong Kong in 1975 and was the youngest of three kids. Her mom was from Hong Kong and her dad was from Malaysia. Her dad died before she was born, and when she was 9 years old, her mom moved her and her sisters to San Francisco in the United States.
After she finished high school in 1992, a company in Hong Kong called Capital Artists offered her a deal to make music. She decided to stop studying at the University of California, Irvine, to focus on her music.
In 1996, she started working with Sony Music Entertainment and her first album, “Coco Lee,” was the most popular album in Asia that year.
Soon, people in both Asia and the United States started to become fans of her music. This led to her working with other artists and making songs in English.
She made 18 albums in total and was in three movies. The most famous ones were “Master of Everything” by Lee Xin and “No Tobacco” by Stanley Kwan.’
In 2011, she married a Canadian businessman named Bruce Rockowitz. He used to be the CEO of a company in Hong Kong called Li & Fung. He, her sisters, and her two stepdaughters are still alive.
