TOHO has revealed the long-awaited next installment in the Godzilla franchise in honor of “Godzilla Day”! Takashi Yamazaki, an award-winning Japanese filmmaker, has been confirmed as doing triple duty on the untitled picture. He’ll be directing, scripting, and supervising visual effects. The film’s plot is unknown but will likely be live-action.
Here’s what we know so far. This page will be updated as new information becomes available.
When Will Godzilla 2023 Be Released?
The untitled Godzilla 2023 film will be released in Japan on November 3, 2023. The release dates for markets other than Japan are presently still being determined. The film has yet to secure an American distributor. However, Shin Godzilla was released in the United States three months after its Japanese debut in 2016, suggesting that an early 2024 release for this new film is possible.
What is Godzilla 2023?
The untitled film will be the 37th installment in the Godzilla franchise. The film will collaborate with Robot Communications and the legendary Toho Company, which released the original Godzilla in 1954 and still controls the character and his universe.
The film will be produced in Japan, with a Japanese staff and cast. This implies the film will be distinct from recent Hollywood adaptations, such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong, which a sequel will follow in 2024. Shin Godzilla, a 2016 Japanese reboot in which Godzilla awakens in modern Japan, is also distinct from this film.
Who is Directing Godzilla 2023?
Takashi Yamazaki, who has overseen both live-action and animated features, is the director of the untitled Godzilla film. For his 2006 film Always: Sunset on Third Street, an adaptation of a well-liked manga series depicting daily life in a Tokyo neighborhood in post-war Japan, he was named Director of the Year by the Japanese Academy Awards.
In addition to countless action blockbusters like Space Battleship Yamato in 2010 and The Great War of Archimedes in 2019, Yamazaki also helmed two Always sequels. CG anime movies like Dragon Quest: Your Story and Lupin III: The First were also directed by Yamazaki.
Yamazaki has previously contributed to the Godzilla series. He recently directed a short video shown during the flight motion simulator Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle at the Seibuen Amusement Park outside Tokyo.
Although Yamazaki isn’t well known outside of Japan, his work on war dramas with grand spectacles and the quest for Japan’s post-war identity make him a fascinating possibility for a new Godzilla film.
What is the Story of Godzilla 2023?
There currently needs to be more information available about Yamazaki’s Godzilla film. All that is known is that the film will take place between 1945 and 1947, as Japanese society strives to recover from World War II.
Who is Starring in Godzilla 2023?
The cast of the untitled 2023 Godzilla film has yet to be disclosed. However, the main photography for the film has already begun. Production began in March 2022 and ended in June 2022. Whoever is starring in the film has not revealed their involvement.

Is Godzilla 2023 Related to the Monsterverse?
No, there won’t be any continuity or canon between the 2023 Godzilla film and the MonsterVerse series. But this doesn’t imply Godzilla has reached its end in Hollywood. A Godzilla vs. Kong sequel is still planned for 2024, with Adam Wingard now serving as the director. For Apple TV+, a brand-new Godzilla television series with a MonsterVerse setting is also in production. So as we move forward, be prepared to see many large lizards.
