Andrews was born to Paul and Martha Andrews in Scottsdale, Arizona. His mother is a real estate agent, while his father is a urologist. He has a sister and three brothers. Andrews was given a Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis when he was nine years old, but the condition has not interfered with him throughout his professional life.
Andrews attended Scottsdale, Arizona’s Desert Mountain High School. He was a wide receiver in high school, recording 1,122 yards and 17 touchdowns on 68 receptions as a senior, 1,494 yards and 21 touchdowns on 81 receptions as a junior, and 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns on 58 receptions as a sophomore.

At Oklahoma, Andrews converted from wide receiver to tight end. He participated in all 13 games with one start in 2015 after redshirting his debut season in 2014 and finished with 19 receptions for 318 yards and seven touchdowns. Andrews started 11 of the 13 games he played in 2016 and hauled in 31 passes for 489 yards and seven scores.
He received the John Mackey Award in 2017. Andrews would miss his senior year at Oklahoma in favor of the 2018 NFL Draft, it was revealed in early January 2018.
