What Happened to Brent Venables Wife?

Brent Venables said that his wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer at his Oklahoma University Media Day press conference. The Sooners coach also said that Julie’s cancer diagnosis made him think of when his mother was fighting cancer in 2005.

“Julie, we got a diagnosis on June 16. It was a knock you off your feet (diagnosis), one that takes me back to talking to my mother in January 2005 and having a Stage 4 conversation. It’s one of those where there’s no blueprint for you to handle that. Our real sanctuary and our true shelter is our faith and the power of prayer.”

The coach said that the family has gotten a lot of help from many different people, and he thanked everyone who has called out. He talked about how great everyone has been to him and his family during a tough time.

“We’ve gotten so much support. I appreciate everybody here that has reached out. It’s been nothing short of amazing. The group of people that have helped. Whether it’s the doctors or administration people, the people I work with, our staff, our players, our player’s parents and certainly so many friends. It’s been great.”

Longhorns B12C Tweeted: Hey, there’s the rivalry and it’s all fun, but things like this are above it. Show your support and send good energy to Julie Venables, wife of Sooners HC Brent Venables, as she battles and defeats breast cancer.

Brent Venables was optimistic about how the treatment would go, saying that he hoped the surgery would help get rid of the cancerous growth to the point where he wouldn’t need intense treatment. He said that they would find out how things are going in the next few days.

“We’re hopeful that we got everything to where we can avoid further treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy. We’ll find that out in the next several days. But we think it’s not in the lymph nodes so that’s a great thing in the cancer world.”

Venables also praised his wife Julie for being strong and resilient during a hard time, pointing out that she had been a nurse before.

“She’s tough. As I said, she’s a honey badger. She’s got a medical background as a former nurse. So she already knows the answer to the questions. So get it right doc. So she’s amazing.”

Brent Venables is almost ready to start his second season as Oklahoma’s head coach. Venables will try to get the school back on track in 2023 after the Sooners had their first losing season since 1999 in his first year in charge.
