In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) decided to prohibit the generic version of the original OxyContin formula. “The FDA has determined that the benefits of original OxyContin no longer outweigh its risks,” declared the agency at the time. As a result, the original form of the medicine should no longer be accessible on the market, having been discontinued for safety grounds.
Purdue Pharma said in 2018 that they will no longer sell the medicine to doctors owing to lawsuits and issues. As a result, the generic version of OxyContin is no longer prescribed.
