What is Our Flag Means Death About?
The comedy series Our Flag Means Death is partially based on the real-life exploits of Captain Stede Bonnet, sometimes known as the Gentleman Pirate because, prior to leaving his family behind to try piracy, he was a fairly prosperous member of Barbados’ landed nobility.
Captain Bonnet and his crew struggle to survive at sea due to their lack of swashbuckling prowess, at least until they come across the infamous pirate Blackbeard, who develops feelings for Stede.
Our Flag Means Death Season 1 Recap
To set the scene, the year is 1717, which was around the time of piracy’s “golden age.” In that year, a rich English aristocratic farmer named Stede Bonnet gave up all his money and went out to sea to become a pirate.
Bonnet got everything he wanted for most of his life. By the time he was middle-aged, he was tired of his easy life and set sail for a life of looting and pillaging.
But even though Stede knew a lot about pirates and what they did, he didn’t really know or understand what they did for a living. This is where the show starts after Stede has put together a strange group of crewmen.
Buttons is a grey-haired sailor who always has a seagull with him. Lucius is a poet whose job is to write down all of Stede’s pirating adventures. Frenchie’s only skills are stitching and singing while playing a makeshift guitar.
The Swede is an unnamed Swedish man who seems very strange and loves to sing, even though he does it horribly. Roach, the ship’s cook; Wee John Feeney, a big man who loves violence and setting things on fire; Oluwande, a kind man with dark skin who always tries to make things right between the crewmates; Jim, a strange young man with long hair and a beard who is also mute; Black Pete is the pirate who is most like how people usually think of pirates.
He is always trying to start an uprising and lies about being on the crew of the famous pirate Blackbeard. As the captain of such a strange and unusual group of crewmates, it is clear that Stede Bonnet is not your typical pirate.
Instead, he is a man who wants his crew to be happy and cheerful more than anything else, so he encourages all kinds of teamwork and fun activities onboard. He has also put his own personal touches on the ship, like a library and walk-in closets for clothes for each season.
But as the days go by, the crew gets more and more bored. They steal from poor fishermen with empty dinghies and have a friendly competition on board where they have to create a flag for their ship, which is called Revenge, and the best one gets put up.
Over the next few weeks, Stede and Blackbeard will get even closer as Stede learns how to fight in a battle. But Izzy Hands doesn’t like that Blackbeard is getting closer to Stede.
He thinks that this makes Blackbeard less violent, so he tells his captain to kill Stede during a raid to get Blackbeard back to his old self. Blackbeard seems to agree with the plan as he gets ready to kill his host, who doesn’t know what’s going on.
