He co-presented Your Weather Today from 2009 until it was rebranded in 2012 as Morning Rush, which he hosted until 2014. In March 2014, the program was renamed America’s Morning Headquarters.
Bettes is now a field reporter for The Weather Channel and serves as the chief field meteorologist for the yearly program The Great Tornado Hunts, which summarizes tornado seasons. He followed scientists as they covered VORTEX2 for TWC. He has also covered Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and other tropical cyclones, floods, and winter storms in real time.
One of the most memorable instances of his career occurred in 2013 when he and The Tornado Crew chasers were directly impacted by a tornado in Oklahoma. Winds lifted and overturned their truck numerous times during the event, sending it around 200 yards away. Following his recovery, he and his colleagues returned to the Great Plains as part of the 2014 Tornado Track to forecast and report severe weather.
