If you’re a fan of The Sinner, you might be thinking that a fifth season of the intriguing anthology series is in the works. The show, starring Bill Pullman as Detective Harry Ambrose, follows him as he investigates crimes committed by improbable suspects and tries to figure out why they did it. Each season features a new tale and cast, but Ambrose is the one constant.
The Sinner was a critical and financial success, gaining Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. It has also been a smash on Netflix, where it is available globally. Will The Sinner return for a fifth season? Here’s what we know so far.
Will There Be a The Sinner Season 5?
There will be no fifth season of The Sinner. The series was canceled by USA Network after four seasons, and it has not found a new home on another service, nor has USA announced plans for a revival, therefore a fifth season is not currently in the works.
While the show’s ratings weren’t what they used to be, it wasn’t canceled only because of them. The goal of USA Network to shift away from scripted shows also played a role, thus The Sinner: Season 5 could happen if another streamer, notably Netflix, is interested in bringing back the show.
How Many Seasons Does The Sinner Have?
So far, The Sinner has four seasons, each with eight episodes. The first season, which was broadcast in 2017, was based on Petra Hammesfahr’s novel of the same name. It starred Jessica Biel as Cora Tannetti, a young mother who stabs a guy to death on a beach for no apparent reason. Ambrose investigates why she did it and what secrets she is keeping.
Carrie Coon starred as Vera Walker, the leader of a strange commune in Ambrose’s hometown, in the second season, which aired in 2018. Julian Walker (Elisha Henig), a 13-year-old child who admits to poisoning a couple, is her son. Ambrose returns to his roots and uncovers a sinister plot.
Matt Bomer is featured as Jamie Burns, a successful teacher and father who is engaged in a deadly vehicle accident with his old friend Nick Haas (Chris Messina) in the third season, which aired in 2020. Ambrose investigates the case and learns that Jamie and Nick had a bizarre friendship involving dangerous games and rituals.
Ambrose traveled to northern Maine to rehabilitate from his earlier trauma in the fourth and final season, which aired in 2021. He becomes embroiled in a tragedy involving the daughter of a renowned family and their rich friends. As he attempts to investigate the mystery, he encounters opposition from the townspeople as well as his own demons.

What is the Ending of The Sinner?
The Sinner’s conclusion varies depending on the season, yet they all share key elements. They usually feature Ambrose discovering the truth about the incident and confronting the perpetrator. They also disclose pieces of Ambrose’s own life and nature, allowing him to empathize with the sinner. They frequently finish with Ambrose fleeing the scene or town, but not without leaving behind some emotional scars.
In season one, for example, Ambrose discovers that Cora was mistreated as a child by her father and aunt and that she witnessed her sister’s death at the hands of J.D., a heroin dealer who also raped her. Because his music aroused her repressed memories, she stabbed J.D.’s friend Frankie on the beach. Ambrose assists Cora in remembering what happened and obtaining a reduced sentence.
Ambrose discovers in season two that Julian was kidnapped by the couple he murdered because they were his biological parents. As part of her cult’s teachings, Vera had taken him away from them when he was a newborn. She also tricked Julian into poisoning them with tea. Ambrose exposes Vera’s deceit and assists Julian in escaping her clutches.

Ambrose discovers in season three that Jamie and Nick are infatuated with Nietzsche’s notion of facing death to overcome one’s fears and limits. They engaged in perilous games such as burying each other alive or stabbing each other with knives.
Nick wanted Jamie to play one more game with him, but Jamie panicked and caused the vehicle accident that killed him. Jamie grew anxious and aggressive after discovering his secret, killing many people. In self-defense, Ambrose confronts Jamie in his home and shoots him.
Ambrose unravels a labyrinth of deception and corruption involving the rich Perry family and their allies in season four. He discovers that their daughter Kate was murdered by her husband Colin after she discovered he was having an affair with their mutual friend Maggie.
Colin then pretended Kate’s death was an accident and attempted to cover it up with the assistance of his father-in-law Leo and his buddy Fisher. Ambrose exposes and arrests them for their misdeeds.
