Star Trek: Picard season 3 has been a big success because it brought back the beloved Star Trek: The Next Generation ensemble, purportedly for one last adventure. However, might the show continue with a fourth season?
The first two seasons of the show divided viewers due to a mainly fresh cast and stories that largely excluded Starfleet. The third season of Picard, however, has been hailed as a return to form, as it unravels an epic space saga with profoundly personal repercussions for Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart).
The Star Trek: The Next Generation cast’s appearance in Star Trek: Picard season 3 has arguably received the most attention. Jonathan Frakes, who portrays Captain Will Riker with a looser, funnier, and more melancholic attitude than he did on TNG, stands out among the actors as being in excellent form.
There was a plan for Star Trek: Picard season 3 to be the final tale for the TNG cast, but is there a chance Jean-Luc and company might return for one more journey?
Is Star Trek Making Picard Season 4?
Despite the popularity of season 3, there are no plans to produce a fourth season of Star Trek: Picard. Patrick Stewart, 82, has acknowledged that the strain of a contemporary television production schedule throughout the course of the show’s three seasons had a negative physical impact on him.
Stewart also acknowledged he found Star Trek: The Next Generation’s final seasons difficult to watch, thus he and the producers always intended Star Trek: Picard to go for three seasons. It appears that this is the end because the season 3 finale, which included a friendly poker game, echoed the beloved TNG series finale, “All Good Things.”
Will Picard Appear In A Film Or On Star Trek: Legacy?
While a fourth season of Star Trek: Picard seems improbable, many members of the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation have indicated that they would be open to returning to the series in some way. Even Patrick Stewart has expressed interest in making one final film with the TNG cast.
With Seven Of Nine (Jeri Ryan) taking command of the newly renamed USS Enterprise-G, the Picard season 3 finale “The Last Generation” openly establishes producer Terry Matalas’ intended spinoff Star Trek: Legacy. Patrick Stewart and the rest of the TNG cast have said they’d be willing to return or guest appear on Legacy if the plot is compelling enough.

Actors’ Status For Picard Season 4 in TNG
The fact that the whole Star Trek: The Next Generation cast survived was one of the pleasant discoveries from the Star Trek: Picard season 3 finale “The Last Generation.” Additionally, they all find themselves in circumstances that make it quite simple for them to return for a potential fourth season of Picard or a new Star Trek: Legacy series.
Jonathan Frakes has stated that he would like to contribute to the creation of any future Star Trek series in addition to returning as Riker. Visiting Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) and Lieutenant Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) on board the USS Enterprise-G periodically also seems like a no-brainer.
The Potential Release Date for Star Trek: Picard Season 4
A fourth season of Star Trek: Picard is unlikely to happen for many years. With the popular Star Trek: Strange New Worlds officially renewed for seasons 2 and 3, Paramount has a reasonably full schedule of Star Trek programming in development.
The teen-targeted Starfleet Academy television series is scheduled to begin production in 2024, and Michelle Yeoh’s Section 31 movie is also now in production.
It is doubtful that either Star Trek: Picard season 4 or the first season of Star Trek: Legacy would launch earlier than 2025 due to the realities of production timetables and Paramount’s recently altered release strategy focusing on event films and miniseries.
Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is now available on Paramount+.
