When Dorothy Hoffner made her first skydive at the age of 100, her amazing journey officially began. On that particular day, she needed a little assistance getting out of the plane, but on this special occasion, she put her walker away and up the stairs to join the others who were anxiously anticipating their skydiving adventure.
She cried, “Let’s go, let’s go, Geronimo!” with a vivacious enthusiasm and unshakeable resolve. These comments signaled the start of a remarkable journey that would inscribe her name in the pages of history. Dorothy Hoffner took the lead as they leaped from a dizzying height of 13,500 feet while tethered to a licensed instructor from the U.S. Parachute Association.
She showed a tremendous feeling of serenity and assurance as she came down. Her graceful headfirst descent, followed by a flawless forward roll, changed into a steady freefall as her belly faced the ground. The steady descent under the parachute and the entire dive took seven minutes. Hoffner left her walker behind and flew with Skyvane on September 30 from Ottawa, Illinois, which is 85 miles south of Chicago.
It was her second time jumping out of an aircraft. She had to be pushed out of the plane when she went skydiving for the first time when she was 100 years old. She cheerfully led the tandem 13,500-foot jump this time.
