The outstanding box office success of 2018’s Black Panther can be attributed to the entire cast and crew, but star Chadwick Boseman played King T’Challa and helped make him one of the most adored figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thus, once Boseman passed away following a fight with cancer, everyone questioned whether Wakanda could continue without its ruler.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever deals with Boseman’s passing in-universe rather than recasting the role or eliminating King T’Challa from the picture. That’s because King T’Challa also perishes in the MCU, and he does so in a manner that is reminiscent of the actor who inspired the renowned character.
How Did King T’Challa Die in Wakanda Forever?
The Heart-Shaped Herb was destroyed by Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) in the first film, therefore the opening scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever follows Shuri (Letitia Wright) as she works against the clock to create a synthetic replacement.
Shuri thinks the extraordinary plant that gives the Black Panther their abilities could hold the answer to saving her brother, who is afflicted with an unknown illness. Unfortunately, Shuri takes too long to find a solution, and T’Challa is forced to travel to the Ancestral Plane.
King T’Challa’s killer ailment is never identified in Wakanda Forever, but the narrative implies that the hero kept his condition a secret from his loved ones until it was too late. T’Challa had to endure the pain alone while something consumed him from the inside out since he didn’t want to worry anyone before his time arrived.
That admirable act reflects Boseman’s own battle with colon cancer. We were shocked by the actor’s passing because we were unaware of his protracted suffering. Most of us were just made aware of his colon cancer after his family tragically announced his passing.

That Mid-Credits Scene Reveal
Boseman kept his medical condition a secret from the public while putting his all into films like Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Black Panther. And while it’s true that life imitates art, Wakanda Forever actually takes advantage of Boseman’s human attributes to elevate T’Challa to the status of a cornerstone in his community.
For instance, Boseman selectively disclosed his cancer to those individuals he felt were necessary to help him get ready to pass away. Similar to T’Challa, he gives Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) and their little son, Toussaint, plenty of time to prepare for saying goodbye before his sister ever learns about his illness.
Another amazing example of how we never truly leave this world but continue to live on via the people we love and the excellent work we leave behind is T’Challa’s unexpected son. As a result of T’Challa’s honorable life, Shuri eventually learns to set aside her anger in Wakanda’s best interests.
Additionally, it motivates M’Baku (Winston Duke) to be true to Wakanda and perhaps even ascend to the throne. The King will spread good in a disordered and hostile world through his son, who is also known by the Wakandan moniker T’Challa.

In the MCU, Wakanda has numerous enemies, but the memory of King T’Challa inspires its citizens to persevere and create a better world. Boseman is also remembered outside of theaters as a unique individual who contributed to the improvement of the world.
Boseman will therefore be remembered by all Marvel fans as the real king of Wakanda, a good man who showed us all how to dream of a global society in which we build more bridges rather than burn them.
