A tragic and fiery collision unfolded on the evening of October 23rd on Interstate 94 in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, and authorities have revealed new details about the incident. Two lives were lost, and six others sustained injuries in the devastating crash.
It wasn’t until more than 12 hours later, at around 10 a.m. the next morning, that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) finally reopened all lanes on westbound I-94 at the crash site. For the commuters’ relief, Highway 128, which connects to I-94, also reopened in both directions later on Tuesday morning.
The collision occurred around 5:38 p.m. on westbound I-94 near the Highway 128 overpass in the vicinity of Wilson. Heartbreakingly, the Wisconsin State Patrol disclosed on Tuesday that both fatalities were the drivers of a Ford F-150 and the semi-truck responsible for the crash. Their names are yet to be released, as authorities are still notifying their families.

The Wisconsin State Patrol’s investigation revealed that traffic on westbound I-94 had slowed down due to lane closures in a construction zone on that fateful Monday evening. Tragically, a 2013 Volvo semi-truck failed to slow down as it approached the congested area, resulting in a catastrophic collision with the Ford F-150 and a Freightliner semi-truck.
The impact set off a chain reaction, involving four other vehicles, leading to a harrowing scene where multiple vehicles caught fire, including the two semi-trucks. In an unsettling twist, one of the semi-trucks was engulfed in flames beneath the Highway 128 overpass, prompting a temporary closure as authorities assessed the bridge for any structural damage. A video shared by witnesses captured the intense blaze underneath the overpass.
Despite the intense and alarming nature of the incident, the State Patrol reported that all individuals who sustained injuries have received medical attention and were subsequently released.
