Tasha Butts, Georgetown’s Women’s Basketball Head Coach, passed away on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023, after a two-year battle with breast cancer. She was a standout player, nationally recognized assistant coach, and first-year head coach. She was 41 years old.

In 2021, the 41-year-old coach was diagnosed with advanced-stage breast cancer. She stepped down as head coach at Georgetown last month. Her diagnosis sparked the Tasha Tough campaign, which raised awareness and funds to provide quality care to women who couldn’t otherwise afford it through the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

The squad tweeted a message on social media on Monday with the phrase “Heartbroken.”

She arrived at Georgetown in April from Georgia Tech, where she had previously coached and played professionally in the WNBA. She joined the Georgia Tech women’s basketball coaching staff in April 2019 as an assistant coach and was elevated to associate head coach two years later.

“I am heartbroken for Tasha’s family, friends, players, teammates and colleagues,” said Lee Reed, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Francis X. Rienzo. “When I met Tasha, I knew she was a winner on the court, and an incredible person whose drive, passion and determination was second to none. She exhibited these qualities both as a leader and in her fight against breast cancer. This is a difficult time for the entire Georgetown community, and we will come together to honor her memory.”

Butts played for famous coach Pat Summitt at Tennessee from 2000 to 2004, winning back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2003 and 2004. During her tenure, the squad had a 124-17 record.
