For quite some time, football fans have been curious about Derrick Gore’s relationship with Frank Gore. In the NFL, both names have come to represent success, and their parallels go beyond just having the same last name.
We will investigate the histories of these two gifted athletes and look for any indications—if any—of a family relationship. We hope to clarify if Derrick and Frank Gore are related by blood or if their names are just coincidental in the world of professional football as we tell their narrative.
Is Derrick Gore Related to Frank Gore?
Despite having the same last name and working in similar positions, Frank Gore and Derrick Gore of the Washington Commanders are not related. Derrick has kept his true name a mystery, but he has been transparent about how his father assisted him in becoming an NFL player.
After playing collegiate football at Miami, Frank Gore was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2005 NFL draft. During his ten years with the team, he recorded the most rushing yards and was selected for five Pro Bowls. In addition, he participated in Super Bowl XLVII once and finished the 2006 season with the most running yards in the NFC.
With 241 games played, he holds the league record for the most games played by a running back. His career was distinguished by its durability, which was unusual for his position.
It should be noted by fans that Frank Gore is a Miami, Florida native. But Derrick is a native of Alabama. The sole son of Frank Gore, who is 21 years old and has played football in the past, is Frank Gore Jr. Thus, it is shown that Derrick and Frank Gore are unrelated.

Where Will Derrick Gore Play NFL football in 2023?
In 2019, Alabama native Derrick Gore, an undrafted free agent, was signed by the Los Angeles Chargers. The athlete joined the Commander’s practice squad later that year. However, he was dismissed by the New Orleans Saints and became a free agent in May 2023 after joining two other teams. Gore has also played for the Kansas City Chiefs in his playing career.

Gore got back together with the Commanders in July 2023. Although he is now a part of the team’s 90-man roster, Washington may only enter the regular season with 53 players on their main roster and 16 on the practice squad.
It is uncertain whether the 28-year-old running back will be chosen prior to the 2023 regular season. Gore ran the ball 51 times for 256 yards and two scores in 11 games for Kansas City in 2021. He also caught eight passes for 105 yards.

Who is Derrick Gore?
After the 2019 NFL Draft, 27-year-old running back Derrick Gore went undrafted. He started college at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas after missing the season due to a preseason injury.
He joined Alabama, an SEC powerhouse, and won a national championship in 2015. He transferred to get greater playing time after two years of restricted opportunity. That led him to Louisiana-Monroe, where he led in rushing in 2017 and 2018.
After not being drafted in 2019, Gore joined the Chargers. He left the team after the preseason at the final cuts. Gore spent two seasons on the Chargers and Washington Football Team practice squads before joining the Chiefs.
His stay in Kansas City looked similar—he again joined the practice squad. He finally made the active roster on October 12, 2021. Since his Week 6 debut, Gore has mostly been a backup. However, he’s reliable when needed.
Gore ran 51 times for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns and caught 8 passes for 105 yards in the regular season. The running back depth chart includes Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Darrel Williams, and Jerick McKinnon.
The Chiefs have rotated running backs this season, but Gore has gotten more touches. He may not be a descendant of Frank and may never reach his namesake’s heights, but Derrick Gore is writing his own NFL story.
