Brazile, the third of nine children born to Jean Marie (Brown) and Lionel Joseph Brazile, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. “Braswell” was the last name of her family several decades ago.
At nine years old, Brazile developed an interest in politics after a local candidate for office made a playground pledge. In high school, she took part in a TRIO Upward Bound program. Brazile attended Louisiana State University (LSU) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in industrial psychology in 1981.
He also held a fellowship at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Institute of Politics. Following her graduation from LSU, Brazile was employed by a number of advocacy organizations in Washington, D.C., where she is said to have played a key role in the effort to establish Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday as a federal holiday.
Brazile volunteered as a teenager for the Jimmy Carter–Walter Mondale 1976 presidential campaign and as an LSU undergraduate for their 1980 presidential campaign.

Political Strategist
Brazile worked on presidential campaigns for Jesse Jackson in 1984, Walter Mondale–Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, and Dick Gephardt in 1988. Brazile became Michael Dukakis’ deputy field director after Gephardt lost the 1988 primary.
Her October 20, 1988 statement to reporters that George H. W. Bush should “fess up” regarding unverified extramarital affair accusations made headlines. Brazile: “The American people have every right to know if Barbara Bush will share that bed with him in the White House.”
The Dukakis campaign promptly disavowed her remarks and fired her shortly after the story broke. George H. W. Bush’s connection with Jennifer Fitzgerald was briefly mentioned during the 1992 campaign against Bill Clinton, who was also accused of extramarital affairs.
Brazile advised District of Columbia Congressional Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton on Capitol Hill’s budget and local legislation in the 1990s as her chief of staff and press secretary. She advised Bill Clinton’s 1992 and 1996 presidential campaigns.
Brazile became the first African-American woman to lead a major party presidential campaign when she became deputy campaign manager of Vice-President Al Gore’s 2000 campaign in 1999.
Kathleen Blanco named Brazile to the Louisiana Recovery Authority board from 2005 until 2009 after Hurricane Katrina. Brazile gave her papers to Hill Memorial Library’s Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections at Louisiana State University Libraries Special Collections.
