Hemmer moderated the Second Annual Adult Stem Cell Research Conference for a week in April 2013 while also serving as the keynote speaker at Miami University Oxford’s Farmer School of Business commencement in May of the same year.
He also founded the MUDEC scholarship and two other Miami University graduates to honor Dr. Emile Haag’s longstanding service to the Miami University Dolibois European Center.

Bill Hemmer Biography
On November 14, 1964, Hemmer was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. His parents are Georganne Mary (née Knittle) Hemmer, a retired teacher and homemaker, and William Ronald Hemmer, a retired executive from a mattress manufacturing firm. Of the five children the Hemmers had, he is the second son and middle kid.
Hemmer graduated in 1983 from Cincinnati’s Elder High School after attending the parochial Catholic school of Our Lady of Victory. Hemmer and a friend launched a radio show in his final year, airing music for fifteen minutes prior to the start of courses. This is when he says his interest in broadcasting started.
His broadcast journalism bachelor’s degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, is held by Hemmer. He studied in Europe at the Miami University Dolibois European Center, which was then situated in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, and became a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity while attending Miami University.

Bill Hemmer Married Career
In the middle of the 1980s, he began working in sports production at WLWT-TV, when he first discovered his love for live television. Hemmer was given an opportunity to work as a sports producer at WLWT-TV during his final year at Miami University.
He quickly accepted a position as a sports reporter and anchor at WCPO-TV, a CBS affiliate. Hemmer left WCPO-TV at 26 to go on a nearly year-long backpacking trip around the globe.
Hemmer visited a number of locations on his journey, including Egypt, Israel, Russia, Nepal, India, China, Hong Kong, and New Zealand. A short while later, he attributes his employment at CNN in Atlanta to this event.
Hemmer penned dispatches and sent audio and images for The Cincinnati Post, a local newspaper that is no longer in publication, as well as for CBS’s local affiliate. These materials were collected into multiple pieces that were combined to become “Bill’s Excellent Adventure.” He received two regional Emmys for Best Entertainment Program and Best Host from the show.
Between 1995 and 2005, Hemmer was a host for several CNN shows, including CNN Tonight, CNN Early Edition, CNN Morning News, CNN American Morning (first with Paula Zahn, then with Soledad O’Brien), and CNN Live Today with co-anchor Daryn Kagan.
Hemmer was one of the first national reporters in Tallahassee, Florida, during the 2000 election. He stayed there for 37 days until the US Supreme Court decided in favor of Governor George W. Bush. Hemmer became well-known across the country for his relentless reporting and was dubbed “The Chad Lad.”
Hemmer reported from Terre Haute, Indiana, where Timothy McVeigh was executed for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing, and he was crucial to the network’s coverage of the execution in May 2001.
He reported from Kandahar, Afghanistan during the American forces’ build-up in the early days of the War on Terror, and from the World Trade Center site in New York City for a month following the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Hemmer covered the mining tragedy live from Somerset, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 2002. The wall separating the workers’ tunnel from an abandoned, flooded mine came away, allowing millions of gallons of water to flow into their work area and trapping nine workers for seventy-seven hours.
Hemmer went to Kuwait in 2003 to report on growing hostilities in Iraq, and as the war broke out, he stayed behind to cover Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Additionally, he covered the Kosovo issue for more than a month, reporting from Brussels on the most recent developments with NATO, the refugee crisis from Skopje, Macedonia, and the aerial bombing missions from Aviano Air Base in Italy.
