Professional Career of Bobby Hurley

Hurley was a standout basketball player at St. Anthony High School. He was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. Hurley assisted in guiding his team to four straight Parochial B state championships while his father, Bob Hurley Sr., was the coach at the school.

Hurley guided St. Anthony to a perfect 32-0 record and the school’s first Tournament of Champions title in his final year. During his senior year, Hurley averaged 20 points, 8 assists, and 3 steals a game. The team’s overall record when Hurley was playing point guard was a remarkable 115-5.

Hurley played point guard for Duke University under coach Mike Krzyzewski from 1989 to 1993 after graduating from high school. In addition to helping the Blue Devils win back-to-back national titles in 1991 and 1992, he was named a first-team All-American in 1993.

In 1992, he was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player. Hurley’s 11-point Duke uniform was retired in 1993, but his 1076 assists still stand as the NCAA record for most assists ever.

In 2002, he was also selected as one of the fifty greatest players in Atlantic Coast Conference history for the men’s basketball squad celebrating the ACC’s 50th anniversary.

Hurley was chosen with the seventh overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings. He inked a shoe deal with ITZ, a brand-new shoe business that sells only at Foot Locker. Hurley, meanwhile, was almost killed in a car accident on December 12, 1993, during his rookie season.

He was flung from his SUV when it was broadsided by a station wagon because he was not using a seatbelt. His injuries were so severe that he needed to be helped right away by teammates, one of which being Mike Peplowski, who arrived first.

Hurley played four more NBA seasons, including one with the Vancouver Grizzlies, after making a comeback for the 1994–95 campaign. On January 25, 1999, the Grizzlies waived him. When Duke faced Seton Hall in the NCAA Tournament, Bobby Hurley faced his younger brother Dan. Hurley became a member of the National Polish American Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
