Ralph Tresvant’s Early Life
Tresvant, the son of Patricia Tresvant and Ralph Hall, was born on May 16, 1968, in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Along with his younger siblings, brother Andre and sister LaTonya, Tresvant grew up appreciating music.
Tresvant began participating in local talent events alongside Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, and Michael Bivins when some buddies from junior high school decided to establish a group.
The guys were discovered at a Roxbury talent event by Brooke Payne, a manager and choreographer in the area who was also an aspiring producer and composer.
Payne gave them the moniker Fresh Edition to denote that they were a fresh iteration of the Jackson 5 following an audition. The Jackson 5 were signed to Maurice Starr’s independent Streetwise Records label in an attempt to produce a “newer edition” of the pop combo.
Payne’s cousin Ronnie DeVoe became the group’s fifth member. Releasing Candy Girl, their first album, in 1983. The group’s record served as a great springboard, yielding hits for teenagers such as “Popcorn Love,” “Is This the End,” “Jealous Girl,” and the album’s title track.
Ralph Tresvant’s Career
Following a financial disagreement, New Edition parted ways with Starr’s management and label, signing with the major label MCA Records, which went on to release the group’s second album of the same name.
The ensemble had become known for Tresvant’s easygoing, soft vocals, and the songs kept coming, including the Top Five hit song “Cool It Now.”
Tresvant, who is quiet and reserved, was first nervous about the prospect of recording a solo album. Tresvant believed that he was not receiving the respect he felt he was due from the group members.
But Tresvant finally gave in when he saw how well-received Bobby Brown’s solo records and the Bell Biv Devoe side project by Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ricky Bell were. In 1990, his self-titled debut album was published.
The lead single, “Sensitivity,” held the top spot on the American R&B Singles chart for two weeks out of a total of twenty weeks. The album also featured two Top 5 hits, “Do What I Gotta Do” and “Stone Cold Gentleman,” the latter of which Bobby Brown, a former band member, contributed a guest vocal. Two million copies of Tresvant’s self-titled debut album were sold, making it double platinum.
The soundtracks to the movies Mo’ Money (“Money Can’t Buy You Love”) and The Preacher’s Wife (“Somebody Bigger Than You and I”) both included songs with Tresvant’s vocals.
He made a brief cameo in the well-known urban comedy House Party 2, which included his two hits, “Rated-R” and “Yo Baby Yo,” from the soundtrack.
