Raised in the neighboring town of Fairfield, he was the middle child of three brothers: younger brother Ben, older brother Carl, and older half-sister Rachel. Mayer has stated that he is tied to Judaism; his father is Jewish.
Mayer played Nintendo with future tennis player James Blake during their three-year friendship, which began when they were in elementary school. John Mayer’s Career
Mayer’s parents talked him out of quitting college to follow his musical dreams. In 1997, at the age of 19, he enrolled in the Berklee College of Music.
After two semesters at Berklee, at the insistence of his college buddy Clay Cook, they traveled to Atlanta, where they started playing in clubs like Eddie’s Attic and coffee shops as a two-man band called LoFi Masters.
Mayer’s inclination to lean more toward pop music, according to Cook, caused them to have different musical tastes. After their split, Mayer started working alone.
Local producer and engineer Glenn Matullo assisted Mayer in recording her self-released EP, Inside Wants Out. Mayer provides lead vocals and guitars on eight of the EP’s tracks.
A complete band was assembled, featuring bass guitarist David “DeLa” LaBruyere, who also served as co-producer of the EP for the first track, “Back To You.” Cook co-wrote many of the album’s tracks, including “No Such Thing,” which became its first commercial single.
His only musical contribution was backing vocals on the track “Comfortable.” Mayer and LaBruyere gave concerts all across Georgia and the surrounding states. Having an online fan base helped Mayer as well since his career began at the same time as the internet music market was just getting started.
Mayer’s lawyer acquaintance sent his EP to Aware Records, where Gregg Latterman of Aware Records discovered it. Early in 2001, Aware released Mayer’s internet-only album, Room for Squares, following his inclusion in Aware Festival shows and his tracks on Aware compilations.
Aware and Columbia Records reached an agreement during which Columbia would have first dibs on signing Aware musicians. Columbia remastered and reissued Room for Squares in September.
The album’s artwork was altered, and the track “3×5” was added as part of the major label “debut.” Remastered studio versions of the first four Inside Wants Out songs were included in the reissue.
