When Dex’s death at the age of 32 was announced in November, Carvey and his wife, Paula Zwagerman, had previously disclosed that the cause of death was an unintentional drug overdose.
“Last night, we suffered a tragedy. Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 32 years old,” the “Saturday Night Live” alum wrote on his social media accounts at the time.

The statement continued, “Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things–music, art, filmmaking, comedy–and pursued all of them passionately.”
“It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life. And when you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends, and his girlfriend, Kaylee. Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.”
With the words “To anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers,” the message came to a close with the names Carvey and Paula.
An autopsy was finished the day after Dex passed away at home on November 15, according to a report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office that Fox News Digital was able to get at the time.

Of the two boys that Carvey and Zwagerman had, Dex was the oldest. Thomas, 30, is also shared by the couple, who got married in 1983. For the first time after Dex’s passing, the 68-year-old comic returned to his and David Spade’s “Fly on the Wall” podcast last week, where he opened up about their family’s grief.
Carvey described the family’s response to the outpouring of love as “incredible” and “really sweet.” He observed that while he and his family grieved, there wasn’t much that anyone could do to support them.
Following Dex’s passing in November, Carvey sent a thank-you note to his followers and declared he would be taking a hiatus from acting.
