Steve Perry’s Early Life
Stephen Ray Perry was born to Portuguese parents from the Azores in Hanford, California. He is the lone child in his family. Perry’s father, Raymond Perry (Pereira), was a singer and co-owner of the radio station KNGS. Therefore, he was exposed to music at a young age. When Perry was eight years old, his parents divorced. Then, he relocated to his grandparents’ dairy farm with his mother.
Perry’s mother, Mary Quaresma, gave him a gold eighth-note pendant for his twelfth birthday, and he wears it as a lucky charm. Perry was twelve years old when he was inspired to become a singer by the song “Cupid” by Sam Cooke, which he heard on his mother’s car radio.

Steve Perry’s Career
To form a band with 16-year-old future music producer Scott Mathews, who co-wrote, played drums and guitar, and sang, Perry relocated to Sacramento in his early 20s. Ice was a band that wrote their songs and had a bright future in the music industry.
They worked throughout the day at the Record Plant studios in Los Angeles in 1972, while Stevie Wonder worked at night on his Talking Book album. After returning to Sacramento, Ice broke up since Mathews was still in high school, the band had no management, and the recordings were essentially unheard.
After relocating to Thousand Oaks, California, in 1975, Perry joined up with Tim Bogert (a former Jeff Beck collaborator), Denver Cross, and Eddie Tuduri to establish the progressive rock group Pieces.
The band broke up after a year and a half because they couldn’t get a record deal. Perry also tried out in vain for the role of Rod Evans’ replacement in Captain Beyond.
After that, Perry moved to Banta, California, which is near Tracy, California, and there, in his mid-20s, he became the lead man for the band Alien Project. After the band’s bassist, Richard Michaels, died in a car crash, he almost gave up on music.
After returning to Lemoore, Perry decided to give up on singing professionally. However, at his mother’s insistence, he took a call from Walter “Herbie” Herbert, the manager of Journey, a band that was having trouble in San Francisco.
