Real Steel was a commercial success and earned positive reviews upon release, but it never had a sequel. Hugh Jackman stars as Charlie Kenton, a former boxer who is down on his luck. With robots replacing humans as boxers in the future, Charlie seeks to escape paying off a gambling debt while simultaneously reconnecting with his estranged son after his ex-girlfriend’s death.
While Charlie initially dismissed his kid by agreeing to let him live with his ex-girlfriend’s family, the two bond over their shared passion for boxing robots, allowing Charlie to find a new lease on life. While a movie about a deadbeat dad unexpectedly finding new meaning in life through his connection with his long-lost son is a cliché plot, the addition of boxing robots made Real Steel a delightful ride and a huge box office triumph.
Real Steel has witnessed a rise in popularity following its Netflix release, so there may be an opportunity for a sequel, even if it has been 12 years since its theatrical debut. Of course, in order to re-capture the magic, everyone involved in the film, including actors and filmmakers, would have to be present.
Is Real Steel 2 Going to Be Released?
In a 2022 interview with Collider, Real Steel director Shawn Levy addressed why the film has not received a sequel. “I really try to not make sequels that don’t deserve to be. And it’s why I didn’t move forward with the Real Steel sequel because I didn’t feel we had a second movie that could match or top the first.”
Many Hollywood brands create sequels to capitalize on the success of the initial installment. Clearly, despite the potential for doing the same with Real Steel, people behind it, such as Levy, do not want to jeopardize the company’s legacy.
It may also be difficult to coordinate all of the ingredients for a sequel, and not simply because so much time has gone since its publication. Dakota Goyo, who played Charlie’s pre-teen son, Max, has matured and retired from acting. To continue the plot, they would have to recast him as either a youngster or an adult.
Despite the lack of a sequel, a Real Steel Disney+ series was announced to begin production in 2022, though there have been little updates since then. If it remains popular on Netflix, Disney may be inspired to continue with the series.

What Could a Real Steel Sequel Have Been?
Anthony Mackie, who played Charlie’s friend Finn, is all for developing a sequel to Real Steel. In 2021, he not only advocated for a sequel to Real Steel, but he believes it may develop into a possible world. “I think the possibilities are endless,” Mackie said. “I always thought about the idea of going to the underground world and seeing what the reality is. The underground boxing circuit is so different than that last fight with all the glitz and the glam and the polish. I feel like you can do a Mad Max meets Real Steel, and I could be Tina Turner.”
