Shonda Lynn Rhimes was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 13, 1970. She grew up in a family with five siblings, where her dad was a college professor and her mom juggled raising kids while pursuing her own education.

Even as a kid, Shonda loved telling stories. In high school, she volunteered at a hospital, sparking her interest in medical settings. She went to Marian Catholic High School and then Dartmouth College, where she studied English and Film.

At Dartmouth, she joined a group called the Black Underground Theater Association, where she got to try her hand at directing, acting, and writing. She graduated in 1991 and headed to San Francisco to work at an advertising agency.

But her real passion was screenwriting, so she moved to Los Angeles to study it at the University of Southern California. She did really well there, earning a fellowship and eventually getting her master’s degree.

While at USC, she interned with a producer named Debra Martin Chase, who became her mentor.
