After receiving his degree, he spent a year in the Minor Leagues before being selected by the Kansas City Athletics in the second round of the 1966 draft. He had a successful career after being called to the Major Leagues in June 1967.
He made his major league debut at a doubleheader for the Athletics at Kansas City. The Athletics relocated to Oakland in the west in 1968. Babe Ruth, who established the previous record in 1927, was momentarily surpassed by Jackson’s 47 home runs in 1969.
